My Reading List

Had a sudden craving the past 2 weeks to indulge in some "Asian-based" literature.

I was banking on something to the likes of Catherine Lim or Amy Tan, my all-time favourite Asian writers.

Unexpectedly, I picked this up instead:

This book is written by Shirley Geok-Lin Lim, who grew up in Malacca.
And of course later educated in the States... (aren't they all?)

The story revolves around 3 sisters, whose mother happens to be the second wife of a some awfully rich tycoon in Malaysia.... well, I can't really remember whether it was the second wife, or the third or the fourth.... but u get the idea.

Anyway the story tells of the different characters of the 3 sisters. Although all 3 finally ended up in the States (again, don't they all?), their life perspectives and values determined their different experiences and probably different endings as well.

The next book that I picked up was this:

This is actually a collection of short stories, majority of which are set against the background of China during the Maoist era.

I found out that the title story was actually made into a movie:

"A thousand years of good prayers" is a film based in the States, not China.

I don't mind watching this someday actually.

This story kinda reminded me something, a Chinese idiom / proverb / saying, which I learnt to be true through the example of my parents' rock-solid marriage, and which I do hope to remember and apply as well in my own marriage.

十年修的共船渡,百年修的共枕眠。
